Early on, electronics and computers served to support different fields of physics and chemistry in carrying out experiments and measurements, in data acquisition and processing, as well as in developing specialpurpose equipment. Later, independent research topics came into sight, covering computer science, communications, servomechanisms, automation and regulation, robotics and medical electronics. Nowadays, a wide range of activities is carried out, including fundamental and applied research, development of systems and technologies, and industrial engineering. The mission of the Institute now lies in transferring new knowledge and advanced technologies to industry and to other customers.<<BR>><<BR>> A system of continuous education has been established for various customers, especially industry, and a centre for knowledge transfer has been organised for this purpose. In the centre for informatics and education, new types of teaching-learning processes are studied and more effective organisational schemes in this area are tested.
