Slovenian Architecture: Kozolec
Use of the Construction

The use of the hayrack: at first, it was used for storing grain, and later, for storing fodder. Today, due to the introduction of cheaper technology, it is only a remnant of former times, a reminder of the Slovenian national heritage.

The hayrack is a typical functional device: it can be simple or elaborate. The former is used for drying, the latter for storing. The Slovenian peasants respected the hayrack for it provided food for men and livestock. But the hayrack has never been only functional. The structure itself has often reflected outstanding artistic qualities of construction: its form and its wooden panelling (including the complete brana and its details, decorative vertical supports, the entrance, as well as the wooden panelling of the gable and the fence of the loading platform).
